The three Gili Islands — Trawangan, Air, and Meno — sit off the northwest coast of Lombok and are among Indonesia's most visited island destinations. No motorised vehicles, crystal-clear water, sea turtles viewable from the beach, and some of the best affordable diving in Asia. For Australians combining a Lombok or Bali trip, the Gilis are a near-essential addition.
This guide covers all three islands in detail. For the full Lombok context, see our Lombok Travel Guide for Australians 2026.

Gili Trawangan — The Social Island
The largest of the three Gilis and by far the most developed. The main strip along the east coast has dozens of restaurants, bars, dive shops, and accommodation options. The Monday and Wednesday night parties are well-known. Snorkelling off the northeast corner regularly produces turtle encounters. Best dive sites are a short boat ride away. If you want to meet other travellers and have a lively base, Trawangan is the choice.
Gili Air — The Sweet Spot
Close enough to Bali and Lombok for easy connections, developed enough to have good food and accommodation, but quiet enough that you can find genuinely peaceful spots. Gili Air has become the favourite of repeat visitors who find Trawangan too busy and Meno too quiet. The snorkelling off the northeast coast is excellent — turtles are common.
Gili Meno — The Romantic Island
The smallest and quietest of the three. A handful of restaurants, limited nightlife, and a pace of life that makes Gili Air feel hectic by comparison. The snorkelling around Meno is the best of the three islands — the coral is in better condition and marine life more abundant. The Blue Lagoon on Meno's eastern side is one of the most beautiful snorkelling spots in Lombok. Best for honeymooners or couples wanting genuine seclusion.
Getting to the Gili Islands from Australia
Via Bali (Most Common)
Most Australians fly to Bali then take a fast boat directly to the Gilis — bypassing the Lombok mainland entirely.
- Departs from: Padangbai, Sanur, or Serangan (Bali)
- Travel time: 1.5–3 hours depending on sea conditions and departure point
- Cost: AUD $40–80 per person one way
- Operators: Eka Jaya, Gili Getaway, BlueWater Express (book in advance in peak season)
Tip: Waterproof your luggage — bags travel on the roof and can get wet.
Via Lombok
If you're already on Lombok, take a local boat from Bangsal Harbour (northern Lombok).
- Public boat: AUD $4–6 per person, departs when full (can wait 30–60 mins)
- Chartered boat: AUD $25–40, departs immediately
- Travel time: 15–30 minutes to Trawangan
Getting Around the Gili Islands
No motorised vehicles on any of the Gilis — transport is by foot, bicycle, or cidomo (horse-drawn cart). Bicycles hire for AUD $5–10/day. The main island, Trawangan, can be circumnavigated on foot in about 90 minutes. Boats shuttle between all three islands several times daily (AUD $5–10 per trip).
Snorkelling and Diving
Snorkelling
All three islands have excellent snorkelling accessible directly from the beach — no boat required. Sea turtles are commonly spotted at all three islands; Gili Meno has the most reliable turtle encounters. The best snorkelling spots:
- Gili Trawangan: Northeast corner (Turtle Heaven)
- Gili Air: Northeast coast
- Gili Meno: Blue Lagoon (east side) — the best snorkelling in the Gilis
Snorkel gear hire: AUD $5–10/day. Snorkelling boat trips covering all three islands: AUD $20–35 per person.
Diving
The Gili Islands are one of Southeast Asia's most popular dive destinations — affordable, excellent visibility, and diverse marine life. Dive sites include Shark Point (white tip reef sharks), the HALIK wreck, and various reef systems with turtles, rays, and diverse reef fish.
| Dive Activity | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| PADI Open Water certification (3–4 days) | $350–450 |
| Fun dives (2 dives) | $70–100 |
| Advanced Open Water course | $300–380 |
| Discover Scuba (intro dive, no certification) | $80–110 |
Most dive schools are on Trawangan; Air and Meno have smaller operations. Book directly with operators on the island rather than pre-booking from Australia — prices are the same and you can assess the operation in person first.
Where to Stay
Budget (AUD $25–60/night)
Simple fan-cooled bungalows, basic a/c rooms. Widespread on all three islands. Clean and functional — the Gilis aren't a destination where most people spend much time in the room.
Mid-range (AUD $60–150/night)
Air-conditioned bungalows, small pools, breakfast included on some properties. Good value compared to equivalent Bali properties.
Boutique/Luxury (AUD $150–350+/night)
Beautiful boutique properties with pools, ocean views, and exceptional design. Gili Meno and the quieter north end of Trawangan have the best upscale options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Gili Island is best for families?
Gili Air is generally the best choice for families — calm enough for children, enough facilities for parents, and easy snorkelling access. Trawangan can feel too party-oriented for families with young children.
Is it safe to swim at the Gili Islands?
Generally yes — the waters around the Gilis are calm and protected. Take normal ocean precautions and be aware that boat traffic between islands creates some risk for swimmers near boat lanes.
How long should I spend on the Gili Islands?
2–3 nights is the minimum to feel the rhythm. 4–5 nights is ideal if diving is a priority. Many travellers stay longer than planned.
Can I visit all three Gili Islands in one day?
Yes — island hopping boats run regularly between all three and the full circuit takes about half a day. But most people choose one island as a base and visit the others on day trips.
