Tanzania offers the classic East African itinerary in its purest form. The Serengeti's vast grassland ecosystem is the world's greatest wildlife spectacle. The Ngorongoro Crater — a 260 square kilometre volcanic caldera with a self-contained ecosystem and the highest lion density in Africa — is the most concentrated wildlife viewing in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) is the world's highest freestanding mountain and one of the world's most walkable high-altitude summits. And Zanzibar — 30 minutes by plane from the mainland — adds powder-white beaches, coral reefs and the extraordinary Stone Town to make a complete Africa trip.

Getting There from Australia

Fly to Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) via Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Dubai (Emirates) or Doha (Qatar). Return fares Sydney–Tanzania: AUD $1,700–3,200. Visas are required for Australians — e-Visa available online (eservices.immigration.go.tz, USD $50) or on arrival (USD $50, cash, queues at Kilimanjaro). Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) — USD widely accepted for tourist payments.

The Serengeti

The Serengeti is the African safari at its most elemental — 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah and acacia woodland with no fences, no roads except dirt tracks, and wildlife at a density that makes experienced safari-goers emotional. The Great Migration (1.5 million wildebeest) is in Tanzania from December to July (the Mara River crossings happen in Kenya's Mara from August to October). Year-round: lion prides, cheetah hunts, leopard in the fig trees, elephant herds, hippo pools and the extraordinary birdlife of the savannah. 3-night minimum to experience the Serengeti properly; 5 nights is ideal.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a massive volcanic caldera (the world's largest intact caldera) with a self-contained ecosystem of 25,000 large animals including all of the Big Five. The crater's 600-metre walls create a microclimate that keeps a resident population year-round — meaning you're almost guaranteed lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and black rhino (one of East Africa's last wild black rhino populations) in a single day. The descent into the crater at dawn, with mist in the valley and the crater rim above, is one of Africa's great travel moments. AUD $350–600 per vehicle per day including crater fees.

Zanzibar — Spice Island Beach Finale

Zanzibar is the perfect Tanzania trip bookend — 30 minutes by plane (AUD $80–150) from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro. Stone Town (UNESCO Heritage, narrow alleyways, Arabic and Swahili architecture, the spice market) is extraordinary for a day. The east coast beaches (Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe) have turquoise water, good snorkelling and reef diving, and a range of accommodation from basic bungalows to luxury overwater resorts. Spice tour (AUD $25–40): a guided walk through a working spice farm with tastings of vanilla, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Tanzania Costs

Tanzania's national park fees are among Africa's highest (Serengeti: USD $70/person/day, Ngorongoro crater: USD $70 additional). A 5-night Serengeti + Ngorongoro safari (mid-range lodge): AUD $3,000–5,000 per person. Adding 4 nights Zanzibar (mid-range resort): AUD $600–1,500. The total Tanzania+Zanzibar trip is one of Africa's premium experiences — the cost reflects the extraordinary quality of what you're experiencing.

Tanzania Safari: The Essentials

The Serengeti National Park is the centrepiece of any Tanzania safari itinerary. The Great Migration -- the movement of 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in a continuous circular route through the Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara -- is the most spectacular wildlife event on earth. The best migration viewing months depend on where in the circuit the herds are: river crossings at the Mara River (the most dramatic and photographed event) peak July-September. The calving season on the southern Serengeti is January-February. There is no wrong time to visit the Serengeti -- the resident predator population (lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog) is year-round. Ngorongoro Crater (a 20km-wide volcanic caldera with the highest density of wildlife in Africa) is a half-day side trip from the Serengeti route and unmissable. Budget for Tanzania safari: a basic camping safari in the Serengeti (tented camps, shared game drives) starts at USD $250-350/day per person all-inclusive. Luxury lodge-based safaris run USD $600-1,500/day per person -- the difference is accommodation quality rather than wildlife access.

Zanzibar After the Safari

Zanzibar (45-minute flight from Dar es Salaam, AUD $80-120 return) is the ideal post-safari recovery destination. Stone Town's UNESCO-listed old quarter has the finest Swahili architecture in East Africa and the spice market and night food market at Forodhani Gardens are genuinely memorable. The north and east coast beaches (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) are white sand Indian Ocean perfection. A Zanzibar week costs AUD $80-150/day including accommodation, food and water activities -- extremely reasonable for the quality.

Tanzania Practical Information for Australians

Visas: the Tanzania e-visa (apply at immigration.go.tz, USD $100 for Australians, 90-day single entry) is required and must be obtained before arrival. Process takes 5-10 business days. Zanzibar (which is technically an autonomous part of Tanzania) uses the same visa -- no separate permit required. Health requirements: Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if travelling from or through a Yellow Fever zone. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the mainland (Dar es Salaam, the Serengeti, the northern circuit). Zanzibar has lower but non-zero malaria risk -- discuss with a travel medicine doctor before departure. Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but USD cash is widely accepted and preferred for safari operators and lodge payments. Bring USD $50 and $100 bills in good condition (pre-2009 bills may be refused). ATMs in Arusha and Dar es Salaam work reliably for international cards but are scarce in national park areas.

The overland Serengeti-Ngorongoro circuit: most Tanzania safaris fly between parks to save time. The alternative is the overland route -- 4-5 hours driving between Arusha (the gateway city) and the Serengeti, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with its extraordinary crater. The overland approach is significantly cheaper (road transfer AUD $50-100 versus charter flight AUD $300-500 per segment) and allows stops at roadside Maasai villages, Lake Manyara and the Olduvai Gorge -- the site of human evolutionary history discoveries. For travellers with sufficient time, the overland route delivers a richer contextual experience than the air-to-park-air-home approach. Tanzania and Zanzibar together create one of the world's most compelling combined itineraries -- the extraordinary wildlife of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro followed by the Indian Ocean beach and Swahili culture of Zanzibar provides a contrast and completeness that very few other long-haul destinations can match.
