Sri Lanka's capital — the starting point for most island circuits. Pettah market, the Dutch colonial fort, excellent Colombo 7 restaurants and the gateway to Kandy, the Hill Country and the south coast.
Sri Lanka is one of the most rewarding countries in South and Southeast Asia — extraordinarily diverse within a small area (65,000 km², similar to Tasmania), with ancient Buddhist temple cities, tea-covered hill country, safari parks with wild elephants and leopards, world-class surf beaches, and a food culture of extraordinary spice and coconut complexity. Colombo, the capital and largest city, is the arrival hub: more chaotic than ordered, genuinely interesting in its Pettah market and Galle Face promenade, and well worth 2 nights before heading into the countryside.
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different coasts: the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) are best November–April. The east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best May–September. This makes it possible to visit Sri Lanka year-round by moving between coasts. The Cultural Triangle (Kandy, Sigiriya, Anuradhapura) is accessible year-round.

A 5th-century palace-fortress built on a 200-metre granite rock plug rising from the jungle plain — UNESCO-listed and considered Sri Lanka's greatest archaeological site. The 1,200-step climb passes remarkable 5th-century frescoes on the rock face and the Lion's Paws gateway. Entry AUD $45 for foreign visitors (steep but non-negotiable). Go at 7am opening for the clearest skies and coolest temperatures.
Sri Lanka's cultural capital — the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) houses a sacred Buddha tooth relic and is the most important Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. Entry AUD $12. The Kandy Esala Perahera (July–August) is one of Asia's greatest festivals — 10 nights of elephant processions, dancers, and drummers through the city streets. Book months ahead.
The central highlands around Ella are Sri Lanka at its most postcard-perfect — the Nine Arch Bridge (a colonial-era stone viaduct photographed with passing trains), Little Adam's Peak hike (2 hours return, extraordinary views), and the surrounding Uva Province tea estates. Stay in Ella 2 nights — it is genuinely beautiful and the food (hoppers, kottu roti) is excellent.
One of the world's highest concentrations of leopards — Yala Block 1 is visited on 4WD game drives (AUD $50–80 per person including park entry and jeep). Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Morning and evening game drives are best. Book ahead in peak season (December–April) as the park limits daily jeep numbers.
Hotels, apartments and villas. All prices in AUD — book with free cancellation where available.

Sri Lanka is safe for tourists following the end of the civil war and recovery from the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. The main concerns are traffic (roads are narrow and driving culture is chaotic) and stomach bugs (drink bottled water, eat cooked food). Monsoon season brings dangerous surf conditions on exposed beaches — check local conditions before swimming.
Galle Face Green (evening sea walk), Pettah market (chaos and colour), National Museum (AUD $2), Cinnamon Gardens for independence monument and Viharamahadevi Park. Good restaurant dining in Colombo 7 district.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Day 3 morning). Dambulla Cave Temple (same day afternoon, extraordinary Buddhist cave paintings, AUD $10). Polonnaruwa ancient city (Day 4, UNESCO, AUD $25). Overnight in Sigiriya or Dambulla area.
Kandy Temple of the Tooth. Train Kandy to Ella (spectacular, book ahead). Ella: Nine Arch Bridge walk, Little Adam's Peak hike. Tea factory tour.
Morning game drive at Yala. Or head to Mirissa for whale watching (November–April, blue whales, AUD $40–60 per person) and beach days. Return to Colombo for departure.
