The city of superlatives — the world's tallest building, the world's largest mall, extraordinary architecture, a thriving food scene and a desert landscape that surrounds one of the world's most ambitious cities.
Dubai has built, in 50 years, what other cities spent centuries assembling — and done so with such velocity and ambition that the result is genuinely extraordinary. The world's tallest building, the world's largest shopping mall, artificial islands visible from space, and a hotel in the shape of a sail that charged AUD $1,500 per night before anyone had heard of the city. For Australians, Dubai is most commonly a stopover on the way to Europe, but it merits 3–4 days in its own right — particularly in the cooler months when the outdoor city becomes accessible.
November–March is Dubai's season — temperatures 20–28°C, outdoor activities are enjoyable, and the desert excursions and beach clubs operate at their best. This is peak season and hotel prices reflect it. December sees significant demand from European and Australian holiday travellers.
April–May and September–October offer good prices and manageable temperatures (27–36°C). Summer (June–August) is genuinely extreme — temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and humidity off the coast is oppressive. Outdoor activities are essentially impossible and the city operates almost entirely indoors. Significant hotel discounts available but not recommended for general leisure travel.

The world's tallest building (828 metres) offers observation decks at Level 124 (AUD $40–55) and Level 148 (AUD $95–120). Book online well in advance — sunset and evening slots sell out. The view extends to the curve of the earth on clear days. The Dubai Fountain show directly below runs nightly from 6pm and is free to watch from the lakeside promenade.
Dubai before the oil wealth: the historic Al Fahidi district preserves wind-tower architecture and narrow alleyways from the 19th century pearl-diving era. The Dubai Museum (AUD $1 entry) provides context. Cross Dubai Creek by abra (traditional wooden boat, AUD $0.30) to the Deira Gold Souk (extraordinary gold jewellery at competitive prices) and Spice Souk (saffron, frankincense, dried limes).
A dune-bashing 4WD safari into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve — sand dune driving, camel rides, sandboarding, and a Bedouin camp dinner under the stars — is Dubai's most distinctive experience. Half-day AUD $70–100, full day with overnight AUD $150–250. Book through reputable operators (Arabian Adventures, Platinum Heritage). Overnight camel treks to sunrise are particularly extraordinary.
