The most beautiful island destination in the Philippines — towering limestone karst cliffs, hidden lagoons, white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise water that rivals anywhere on earth.
El Nido in northern Palawan is the kind of place that ends up being the highlight of a trip when it wasn't even the main destination. The town is a small, slightly chaotic base on the edge of the Bacuit Archipelago — a collection of 45 limestone karst islands rising from crystal-clear water, harbouring hidden lagoons, coral gardens, and white-sand beaches accessible only by boat. The Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, and Shimizu Island are among the most photographed places in Asia, and the water quality — clear to 20+ metres on calm days — makes snorkelling here among the best available without a scuba tank. For Australians, reaching El Nido requires: Sydney or Melbourne to Manila (direct with Philippine Airlines or Cebu Pacific, 7 hours), then Manila to Puerto Princesa (1 hour domestic flight), then 5 hours by van north to El Nido — or a direct flight from Manila to Ley-Ley Airport near El Nido on Air Juan (1.5 hours, AUD $80–120).
November–May is the dry season and best time to visit. December–February are the peak months for calm weather and visibility. March–May is excellent — slightly less crowded than the Christmas period and the water remains calm. The June–October monsoon (habagat) brings rough seas that can close down island-hopping tours entirely — most tour operators suspend operations during the worst weather.

The most popular tour from El Nido — the Big Lagoon (enter by kayak through a narrow passage into a hidden lagoon enclosed by 200-metre limestone karsts) and the Small Lagoon (even more enclosed, accessible only by swimming through a cave opening). Both are extraordinary. AUD $20–25 per person including kayak and snorkelling equipment, with stops at Shimizu Island for coral gardens and Secret Beach (entered by swimming through a rock opening into a hidden cove). Book at least a day ahead.
Tour B or C covers Helicopter Island (a perfect crescent of white sand with the best coral snorkelling in the archipelago) and the Twin Beaches (two beaches connected at low tide by a sandbar). AUD $20–25 per person. These tours reach different islands from Tour A — doing both over consecutive days covers the best of the archipelago.
45 minutes north of El Nido town, Nacpan and Calitang beaches are twin 4km stretches of white sand connected at a point — among the most beautiful in Palawan. Accessible by motorised tricycle (AUD $5 each way) or motorbike rental (AUD $8–12/day). No entrance fee, minimal facilities, and genuinely uncrowded by El Nido standards.
Hotels, apartments and villas. All prices in AUD — book with free cancellation where available.

El Nido is generally safe. Water safety: the open-ocean passages between islands can have strong currents and become rough quickly — always check weather before island-hopping and follow your boatman's advice about sea conditions. The sea can change from calm to dangerous within an hour during the wet season. Electricity and water supply in El Nido town are intermittent — power cuts are common, particularly at night. Most accommodation has generators. Mosquito-borne dengue fever is present in Palawan — use repellent at dawn and dusk.
