Vietnam's ancient capital — French colonial architecture, the best pho in the country, Hoan Kiem Lake and the gateway to Ha Long Bay. A city that rewards slow exploration.
Hanoi is everything Ho Chi Minh City is not — slower, cooler, more French in its architecture and café culture, and with a historical depth (it has been Vietnam's capital for over a thousand years) that gives the city genuine weight. The Old Quarter's 36 ancient trade guilds streets are chaotic and extraordinary, the French Quarter's boulevards are leafy and elegant, and the lake at the city's heart — Hoan Kiem — provides a daily gathering point where Hanoians practise tai chi, badminton and exercise at dawn and families stroll at dusk. Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site of limestone karsts rising from an emerald sea, is 3.5 hours east.
October–April is the best time — cool and dry (Hanoi has a genuine winter unlike Ho Chi Minh City, dropping to 14–18°C in January). March and April are ideal: warm enough for Ha Long Bay cruising, cool enough for Old Quarter walking, with the Hanoi Opera and cultural calendar in full swing.
May–September is hot and humid (30–37°C) with heavy rainfall from June–September. Ha Long Bay becomes rough and dramatic in the typhoon season (August–September). Not impossible but requires planning around weather.

The most extraordinary natural landscape in Southeast Asia — 1,600+ limestone islands rising from the Gulf of Tonkin. A 2-night cruise (AUD $180–300 for mid-range operators, AUD $350–600+ for luxury junk boats) delivers kayaking through sea caves, swimming in the emerald water, and sunrise over the karsts. Book through reputable operators: Paradise Cruises, Indochina Sails, Au Co. Avoid cheapest options — boat quality matters significantly.
Hanoi's street food is extraordinary and most authentic at breakfast. Phở bò (beef noodle soup) from a street stall at 6–8am: AUD $1.50–2.50 per bowl. Bún chả (grilled pork with noodles) for lunch: AUD $2–4. Bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls with pork) for breakfast: AUD $1–2. Egg coffee (cà phê trứng) at Café Giang: AUD $2–3 — sweet, frothy, and uniquely Hanoian.
The lake at the centre of Hanoi — Turtle Tower island in the middle, Ngoc Son Temple on a small island reached by a red lacquer bridge (AUD $0.50 entry). Dawn here: tai chi practitioners, chess players, families exercising. The lake is the social heart of the city.
Ho Chi Minh's embalmed body lies in state in a massive granite mausoleum — open Tuesday–Thursday and Saturday–Sunday mornings (closed October–November for maintenance). Entry free; dress conservatively, phones in bags, absolute silence required. Queue can be long but moves quickly. The adjacent Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Presidential Palace gardens are worth seeing.

Hanoi is safe for tourists. The main issues are traffic (some of the world's most chaotic — cross roads by walking steadily and predictably, letting motorcycles flow around you) and bag snatching from motorbikes in tourist areas. Keep bags on your inside shoulder away from the road.
Morning: Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn (6am for tai chi and atmosphere). Old Quarter walking — find a phở cart for breakfast. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (if visiting Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun). Temple of Literature. Evening: Old Quarter bar street (Ta Hien) and bía hơi (street draft beer, AUD $0.30).
Overnight or 2-night cruise. Return to Hanoi for departure flight or onwards to Hoi An (1 hour by plane, AUD $40–80).
