Cape Town

November–April (Summer) is Cape Town's season — warm (22–30°C), dry, and with the best conditions for outdoor activities, beaches, and mountain hiking. December–January is the peak with school holiday visitors; November and April are excellent shoulder months. The Cape Doctor (a strong south-easterly wind called the southeaster) blows frequently in summer — it keeps the air clear but can be fierce on exposed mountain slopes.

June–September (Winter) brings rain, cooler temperatures (12–18°C), and the whale-watching season — southern right whales calve in Hermanus, 90 minutes from Cape Town, from June to November. This is the best time to see whales, and the city's restaurants and wine estates are uncrowded and often at reduced prices.

1. Table Mountain

The flat-topped mountain defining Cape Town's skyline is reached by rotating cable car (AUD $35–45 return) or on foot (several trails, 2–3 hours up, Platteklip Gorge is the most direct). Views from the top extend across Cape Town, Table Bay, the Cape Peninsula, and — on clear days — to the edge of the continent. Go in the morning for clear skies; the mountain clouds over (the "tablecloth") by early afternoon. Book cable car online in advance.

2. Cape Peninsula day drive

The most spectacular coastal drive in Africa — Chapman's Peak Drive (toll road, AUD $4), Hout Bay harbour, the Cape of Good Hope (southwesternmost point of Africa, not southernmost — that's Cape Agulhas), and the boulder penguin colony at Boulders Beach (AUD $12). Hire a car for the day (AUD $50–80) or join a guided tour (AUD $80–130). Allow a full day.

3. Robben Island

The island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Ferries depart from the V&A Waterfront (AUD $35–40 including tour, 3–4 hours). The guided tour is conducted partly by former political prisoners — the experience is unlike any other political heritage site. Book weeks ahead; ferries sell out. Morning departures have the best weather.

4. Winelands — Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

South Africa's Winelands are 45–60 minutes from Cape Town and among the most beautiful wine regions in the world — Dutch-colonial Cape Dutch architecture, oak-lined streets, and exceptional Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Stellenbosch: town centre walkable, 100+ cellar doors. Franschhoek: smaller, more beautiful, the best restaurant scene in South Africa (The Test Kitchen, Babel). Hire a car or join a wine tour (AUD $100–150 including transport and tastings).

Cape Town is outstanding value for Australians at current exchange rates:

• Mid-range guesthouse or boutique hotel: AUD $100–200/night.
• Restaurant dinner: AUD $25–50 per person at good restaurants.
• Winelands cellar door tasting: AUD $8–15 per person.
• Table Mountain cable car return: AUD $35–45.
• Robben Island ferry and tour: AUD $35–40.
• Cape Peninsula day hire car: AUD $50–80.
• Craft beer at a Cape Town brewery: AUD $4–6.

Cape Town requires more active safety awareness than most Australian travel destinations:

• The city centre (CBD), V&A Waterfront, Atlantic Seaboard (Sea Point, Camps Bay) and Stellenbosch are generally safe for tourists during daylight hours with normal vigilance.
• Do not walk in the CBD or parks after dark. Use Uber for all night transport — metered taxis are less reliable.
• Keep car doors locked while driving. Do not leave valuables visible in parked cars.
• The Cape Flats townships require specific guidance from local operators — do not drive through township areas without an experienced local guide.
• Register on Smartraveller (smartraveller.gov.au) before departure.

Day 1: City and Waterfront

Morning: Table Mountain (cable car, book ahead). Afternoon: V&A Waterfront — Two Oceans Aquarium (AUD $20), Market on the Wharf for lunch. Sunset: Signal Hill or Lion's Head for the panoramic view. Dinner: De Waterkant neighbourhood.

Day 2: Robben Island and Bo-Kaap

Morning: Robben Island ferry (book ahead, 3–4 hours including ferry). Afternoon: Bo-Kaap neighbourhood — cobblestone streets of pastel houses, Cape Malay cultural heritage, Nurul Islam Mosque. Long Street for coffee. Dinner: Kloof Street restaurant strip.

Day 3: Cape Peninsula

Full day: hire car or tour. Hout Bay harbour, Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach penguin colony (arrive early), Fish Hoek for lunch. Return via Constantia wine valley for a sunset tasting.

Day 4: Winelands

Stellenbosch: hire car, spend the morning exploring cellar doors (Rust en Vrede, Meerlust, Kanonkop are exceptional). Lunch at Jordan Wine Estate. Afternoon: Franschhoek — pass the memorial, explore the village, one more cellar door. Return for dinner in Cape Town.
