The gateway to Asia — extraordinary food hawker centres, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island and some of the finest hotels in the world. An easy first international destination for Australians.
Singapore is the gateway drug to Southeast Asia — an extraordinarily efficient, safe, clean, English-speaking city-state that makes the region accessible without sacrificing comfort or safety. It is simultaneously the world's busiest port, one of its most diverse food cultures (where Chinese, Malay, Indian and global cuisines collide at extraordinary quality), and a genuine showcase of what a city can do when it actually functions. For Australians, Singapore is 7–8 hours by direct flight from Sydney or Melbourne, making it perfect for a long weekend or as a regional hub.
Singapore lies 1 degree north of the equator and has no real seasons — it is hot (28–34°C) and humid year-round with rain possible any month. The "drier" months (February–March and July–August) have slightly less rainfall, but the difference is not dramatic enough to drive travel timing decisions. Visit when flights are cheapest. Singaporean public holidays (Chinese New Year in January–February, Deepavali in October–November) bring colourful celebrations worth timing your visit around.

Singapore's hawker centres are UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage and the greatest food experience in Asia. Maxwell Food Centre, Old Airport Road Food Centre, and Lau Pa Sat are the classics. Chicken rice from Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at Maxwell (AUD $4–5 per plate), char kway teow from Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, laksa from 328 Katong Laksa. Budget AUD $15–25 for a full hawker centre meal with drinks. This is why people come back to Singapore.
The Supertrees — 18 enormous vertical gardens lit in extraordinary colour after dark — are free to walk among (grounds open until midnight). The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories cost AUD $25–30 combined and are genuinely extraordinary. Go at 7:45pm for the free Supertree light show. The walkway between Supertrees offers the best views (AUD $8).
The iconic three-tower hotel with its floating infinity pool on top is the most photographed image in modern Singapore. Non-guests can access the SkyPark Observation Deck (Level 57) for AUD $28. The Observation Deck gives near-identical views to the infinity pool. Alternatively: CE LA VI bar on top of Tower 3 for cocktails (AUD $25–35 each) with identical views and no entry fee.
Singapore's ethnic neighbourhoods are living culture, not museum pieces. Kampong Glam (Arab Street, Haji Lane, Sultan Mosque) for Middle Eastern and Malay culture, perfume shops, and excellent restaurants. Little India (Serangoon Road) for Tamil Hindu culture, flower garland sellers, banana leaf curry for AUD $6–10, and the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Both are best explored on foot.

Singapore is expensive by Southeast Asian standards but competitive with Australian cities:
Singapore's hawker centres make it possible to eat extraordinarily well for AUD $15–25/day on food alone — offset this against the accommodation costs.
Day tours, skip-the-line tickets, cooking classes and sunset cruises — book ahead in peak season.

Singapore is one of the world's safest cities with extremely low crime rates. Specific rules Australians must know:
Morning: Colonial Singapore — the Padang, St Andrew's Cathedral, the Raffles Hotel lobby (free to enter and explore). Boat Quay riverside. Afternoon: Marina Bay Sands SkyPark. Gardens by the Bay — Supertrees at dusk, light show at 7:45pm. Dinner: Lau Pa Sat hawker centre (inside a Victorian cast-iron market hall).
Morning: Little India (early morning flower garlands and temple activity). Lunch: banana leaf curry at Komala Vilas. Afternoon: Kampong Glam — Sultan Mosque, Arab Street, Haji Lane. Evening: Clarke Quay for drinks or Chinatown food street.
Sentosa Island (connected by cable car or monorail) has Universal Studios Singapore (AUD $80–95 entry), Adventure Cove Waterpark, and beaches. Day trip to Batam, Indonesia (35-minute ferry, no visa required for Australians) for dramatically cheaper massages and seafood. Return by evening.
