Maldives

November–April (Dry Season) is the Maldives at its best — calm seas, maximum visibility for snorkelling and diving (25–30 metres), and the overwater bungalow experience at its most perfect. December and January are peak season: prices highest, book 3–6 months ahead for premium resorts. April and November are excellent shoulder season months with lower prices and good conditions.

May–October (Wet Season): More rain (typically short bursts rather than all-day), choppier seas, and reduced snorkelling visibility. Prices drop 30–50% at many resorts — those happy with occasional cloud cover and less-than-perfect snorkelling find exceptional value.

1. Snorkelling your housereef at dawn

The best Maldives experience is free: slip off your overwater deck at 6am before the heat builds and snorkel the housereef. Reef sharks, turtles, rays, lionfish, parrotfish, and extraordinary coral — the diversity on a healthy Maldivian housereef is genuinely extraordinary. No tour, no guide, just you and the reef.

2. Diving

The Maldives is one of the world's top 5 dive destinations — whale sharks, manta rays, thresher sharks, and enormous schools of fish in the channel passages (kandus). Diving courses (PADI Open Water): AUD $500–700. Guided dives for certified divers: AUD $80–130 per dive. Many resorts have on-site dive centres.

3. Male city visit

Male, the capital, is one of the world's most densely populated islands — 130,000 people on 5.8 square kilometres. A contrast to the resort experience: the bustling fish market (extraordinary morning activity), the Grand Friday Mosque, and the local food cafés (hedhikaa — traditional Maldivian snacks like gulha fish dumplings, AUD $0.30 each).

The Maldives is affordable at the guesthouse level, expensive at the resort level, and extraordinary at the luxury resort level:

• Guesthouse on a local island (Maafushi, Guraidhoo): AUD $80–150/night — this is the best-value way to experience the Maldives. Local islands have proper beaches (bikini beaches designated), snorkelling, and restaurants at local prices.
• Mid-range resort: AUD $400–800/night per room.
• Luxury overwater bungalow: AUD $1,000–4,000+/night.
• Seaplane transfer: AUD $300–600 return per person.
• Note: alcohol is only served at tourist resorts — local islands are alcohol-free.

The Maldives is very safe for tourists. The ocean presents the primary risk: strong currents in channel passages during tidal changes — always dive and snorkel with a local guide in channels, never alone. The sun is extreme (UV index 12+ year-round) — comprehensive sun protection is essential. Respect local island customs on inhabited islands: modest dress (cover up when leaving the beach) and no alcohol on local islands.

Day 1–2: Male and transfer

Fly into Velana International Airport (Male). Speedboat or seaplane to your island/resort. Arrive, snorkel the housereef, recover from the flight, watch the sunset from your deck.

Days 3–5: The water

Snorkelling housereef at dawn daily. Guided snorkelling trip to a channel (rays, sharks). Diving if certified. Sandbank picnic. Dolphin cruise (most resorts offer at sunset). Do as little as possible above the surface — the point is what is below.

Day 6–7: Departure

Final morning snorkel. Seaplane or speedboat back to Male. Most Australian connections depart via Colombo, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
