May–October (Dry Season) is Fiji's best — the southeast trade winds keep humidity low, temperatures comfortable (24–28°C), and the sea clear and flat. June–August are the driest and most popular months for Australians; book ahead for the July school holidays.
November–April (Wet Season) brings heavier rain, higher humidity (28–33°C), and occasional tropical cyclones. January–March is the peak cyclone season. Fiji's coral reefs are among the world's finest — soft coral diversity is extraordinary. The Great Astrolabe Reef (Kadavu), the Namena Marine Reserve, and the Mamanuca reef systems deliver world-class diving at all experience levels. Most island resorts include snorkelling equipment; diving courses and guided dives run AUD $80–150 per dive.
Fiji's villages are extraordinarily welcoming to visitors. Kava ceremony participation (the traditional root drink, earthy and mildly numbing), traditional meke dancing, and home-cooked lovo feast (food cooked in a ground oven). Most organised through your resort or a local guide. Village visits require modest dress (cover knees and shoulders) and respectful conduct.
The Yasawa island chain — 90km of volcanic islands in the northern Mamanuca group — is served by the Yasawa Flyer catamaran (AUD $35–80 per leg). Fiji is very safe. Water safety is the primary concern — strong currents and unpredictable ocean conditions at outer reef passages. Always swim in designated areas and follow local advice. Mosquito-borne dengue fever is present in Fiji — use repellent and wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk. The tap water is not safe to drink outside Suva — drink bottled water.
